Ubuntu and Kubuntu 8.04 installation
This document applies to all people who installed kubuntu or ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron, desktop version, and also Kubuntu 8.04 KDE4 Remix .
The instructions provided assume that you have completed the desktop
installation with one of the desktop CDs and that you have a fast internet connection
or you have the ubuntu DVD + the ipfire-wall-0.98.8-1_ubuntu-8.04.deb
package within reach (read ahead).
Moreover, the installation you have performed must be the default one; this means that
you do not have rebuilt the kernel nor you have chosen a kernel different from the one
proposed (and automatically installed by the ubuntu cd).
If you don't know what we are talking about and you have succeeded installing ubuntu or kubuntu,
then all should be likely to be perfect.
One click installation
The ipfire-wall-0.98.8-1_ubuntu-8.04.deb package can be installed in just one click if you are running ubuntu 8.04 or kubuntu 8.04.
- download the package ipfire-wall-0.98.8-1_ubuntu-8.04.deb from the sourceforge.net ipfire-wall project page;
- double click on the downloaded .deb archive, or right click on it and choose the install option from the context menu.;
- follow the instructions and accept the dialog window questions throughout the whole process;
- at the end, to start the firewall just installed, open a terminal and type
sudo /etc/init.d/rc.ipfire start, typing the administration password if required. This will load the ipfire-wall framework into the system, and the default rules and configuration that the firewall comes with at the moment of the first installation. - The graphical user interface can be executed from the Applications menu in
the Gnome or KDE panel, Internet submenu.
In that submenu, three launchers are available:- ipfire-wall command line interface, the older console interface;
- iqfire-wall graphical user interface, for normal user (recommended use);
- iqfire-wall graphical user interface executed as root, to be used by the system administrator to configure system wide rules and configurations, i. e. the rules loaded at computer startup and valid for each user. You might be interested in reading the ipfire-wall documentation to learn about the architecture of ipfire-wall and the administration/unprivileged users relationships.
-
Notes:
- The installer (gdebi) will probably install some other packages needed by ipfire-wall as dependencies: for this you might need a fast internet connection or the ubuntu or kubuntu DVD source.
- To perform the installation, you will need the administrative privileges.
- If you are working with Kubuntu read this documentation to learn more about Install/Uninstall .deb files;
- if you are working with ubuntu read this page.
- You will have to confirm the installation also if you receive warnings about unauthenticated software, otherwise the process will fail.
Generic installation
If you weren't able to install the software via the method described above, or if you want to understand better the installation process, then the steps to follow are these:
- download the package ipfire-wall-0.98.8-1_ubuntu-8.04.deb from the sourceforge.net ipfire-wall project page;
- install the packages needed to run ipfire-wall on the
ubuntu/kubuntu 8.04: libqwt5-qt4, libqt4-core, libqt4-gui.
You need to install these additional packages (if not previously installed
on your own), because the firewall bases on some other software (libraries)
which might not be installed by the default desktop installation.
- open a terminal and type: sudo apt-get install libqwt5-qt4 libqt4-core libqt4-gui
- type your password and finally press the return key;
- finally, you must answer Y Yes to the prompt to install the packages above, with their dependencies.
- Note
that the number of packages to install (as dependencies)
might vary in number, depending on the
ubuntu installation you have performed.
Typically, Kubuntu 8.04/KDE4 Remix will need a littler number of packages in addition to those listed in the apt-get command above (or even less than), while ubuntu or kubuntu 8.04 will need some more packages to install. Anyway, the installation will be automatically performed by the installation system. - Alternatively, you can install the packages required graphically, with the program
Adept Manager on kubuntu or Synaptic on ubuntu.
From the menu in the panel, choose Install/Remove applications and look for the
packages listed above.
- Useful info about installing applications can be found here for kubuntu and here for ubuntu.
- Install the downloaded ipfire-wall-0.98.8-1_ubuntu-8.04.deb package obtained in the first step:
- open a terminal and move to the directory where you downloaded the package: type
cd path/to/package, for example cd /home/bob/downloads - install the ipfire-wall package for ubuntu, typing:
sudo dpkg -i ipfire-wall-0.98.8-1_ubuntu-8.04.deb - read carefully all the messages displayed by the automatic installer;
- you are now ready to launch the firewall:
- If you go to your desktop panel and click on the applications menu (menu K on KDE), you should find a launcher for iqfire-wall under the Internet submenu. Click on it to launch iqfire-wall;
- to configure the firewall rules and settings as administrator, look in the menu for the icon iqfire-wall in administration mode, but remember to use the firewall in administration mode only if strictly necessary;
- optionally, you can drag with the mouse the icon above and drop it into the desktop workspace to create a launcher inside your desktop.
- eventually, configure the firewall reading the IqFIRE-wall configuration.
We suggest you to read also the generic installation instructions to learn some important concepts about the firewall installation or to solve some problems which might happen.
